CAYUGA FLORA (1926) NOTES: Dry pastures and borders of woods, especially in gravelly, slightly calcareous, soils ; common. Aug.-Sept. In the Cayuga Lake Basin, most abundant in the McLean region. Newf. to Alaska, southw. to Pa., Kans., and Oreg., including the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Found also in Asia. Plants approaching var. occidentalis Greene in the more glabrous foliage and the larger upper leaves, have been found southeast of Etna (A. Gershoy) and on Turkey Hill. A form with the leaves green above but narrow (forma anochlora Fernald, Rhodora 24 : 205, 1922) is occasional.
