Cornaceae

This taxon is often treated as Cornus foemina subsp. racemosa (see J. S. Wilson, 1965: Trans. Kansas Acad. Sci. 67:747.). Mitchell (1997, 2000) followed Wilson and also treated C. racemosa as a subspecies of C. foemina. Because of the allopatric but essentially contiguous distribution of the two taxa, a subspecies treatment is certainly reasonable. However, we follow NYFA and USDA PLANTS here and treat C. racemosa and C. foemina as two separate species. In any case, C. foemina (or C. foemina subsp. foemina) does not occur in NY state; it is more southeastern in distribution (see Wilson, 1965).
