CAYUGA FLORA (1926) NOTES: Thickets and clearings in not too dry gravelly soil, in both acid and alkaline regions ; common. Aug.-Sept. P. E. I. to Ont, southw. to Fla., Ill., Nebr., and Tex., including the Coastal Plain. Individuals with the upper leaves reduced in size (var. intermedia Fernald, see Rhodora 19 : 27, 1917) are even more common than those with large leaves.
