accepted accepted == Quercus prinus
Rock Chestnut Oak

Fagaceae

The name Quercus prinus L. is often used for this species. However, the type specimens of Q. prinus are a mixture of both this species, and a related species of chestnut oak often referred to as Q. michauxii (not known from Tompkins County). Jim Hardin (1979, Taxon 28:355) recognized this problem and proposed that the name Q. prinus be considered a nomen ambiguum. The name is now in the process of being officially rejected because of persistent usage for more than one species(Whittemore & Nixon, Taxon, in press). Thus, we use the name Q. montana for the more upland species of our area and the name Q. michauxii for the lowland species that occurs to the southeast of our area.
