DIVERSITY OF LIFE TOMPKINS COUNTY FLORA
Rhus typhinaL.
Mitchell NYNYFA TCUSDA NY

Staghorn Sumac

Anacardiaceae

The name Rhus hirta was used by Mitchell (1994) for this species; this was a correct treatment at the time. R. hirta (L.) Sudworth was originally described as Datisca hirta L. Both R. hirta and D. hirta have been officially rejected (Reveal, 1995. Taxon 44: 433). Although the name R. hirta is still commonly used, R. typhina is the correct name for this species.
CAYUGA FLORA (1926) NOTES: Drv banks and thickets, in gravelly, more or less calcareous, soils ; common. July 1-15. Not found in the acid soils with chestnut and ericaceous plants. E. Que. to Out. and S. Dak., southw. to Ga., Ind., and Miss., but rare on the Coastal Plain. R. hirta (L.) Sud., an earlier name, was based on an abnormal or monstrous form of the species, and therefore is not valid.
