Handeliodendron (Hippocastanaceae)

Handeliodendron was originally placed in Sapindaceae by Rehder, but has been considered to be anomalous there. Recent molecular analyses place Handeliodendron as nested within the Hippoocastanaceae clade as a sister taxon to Aesculus. Handeliodendron has deciduous, opposite, palmately compound leaves, as in Aesculus. It differs in having arillate seeds, as in some Sapindaceae. Flora of China also treats Handeliodendron as a member of Hippocastanaceae (Nianhe Xia, Nicholas J. Turland & Paul A. Gadek, 2007). See our reasoning for maintaining Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae (contra APG II) under those families.
